“This investment is not included in the budget to take over businesses, which is Bt200 billion for 2013-2018,” said Kan Trakulhoon, president and chief executive of SCG.
Meanwhile, the group is doubling its budget to between Bt7 billion and Bt8 billion a year to develop its energy-saving systems for sustainable growth.
“This is not only better for the group by reducing energy costs, but is also better and friendly to the environment in the long term,” Kan said.
SCG continues to lead the construction-materials industry for the fourth year in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI).
The budget had averaged Bt4 billion a year, but will start to be boosted next year.
The group has spent Bt17 billion from 2009-13 to develop its energy-saving system by recycling waste heat and using biogas and other systems. A return on this investment is expected within five years.
The cement industry is one of those that consume a lot of natural resources, but SCG says it is concerned about doing business in a way that is friendly to the environment and society. This is the way to develop its business for the long term, it believes.
Not only does it invest in energy-saving systems at all of its plants in Thailand and overseas, since 2007 it also has had a policy to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from all of its plants, said Roongrote Rangsiyopash, chairman of the SCG Sustainable Development Committee.
Thanks to this strategy, the group has been included in the DJSI since 2004. It has also been classified by the DJSI as the global leader in the construction-materials industry for the fourth consecutive year, and placed in the gold class for the seventh year since 2008.
