Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said yesterday that the restructuring would be complete by next month.
The institute would act as an independent regulator while the department would manage provincial airports. The decision was made in line with the absolute power provided by Article 44 of the provisional constitution and used by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as chief of the National Council for Peace and Order to expedite the restructuring of the Civil Aviation Department.
The move was aimed at improving the department’s management after its failure to meet international aviation standards led to a ban on Thai chartered flights by Japan, Prajin said.
