Deadline set for prepaid customers to register their phone numbers

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has urged mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to campaign harder to get their prepaid customers to register their mobile phone numbers.

The NBTC found very little progress in the registration drive. Only 14,000 have been registered out of a total of 451,000, an NBTC source said yesterday.

Among the MVNOs are Samart Corp, Loxley and 168 Communication.

The NBTC had set July 31 as the deadline for registering all prepaid SIM cards. Unregistered prepaid users will not be able to make calls after the deadline.

MVNOs lease the networks and airtime of telecom operators to provide their service.

There are 41.29 million registered out of the 106 million prepaid users of all networks.

Advanced Info Service and its subsidiary, Asia Wireless Network, have already registered 22.3 million of their 44 million prepaid phone users.

Total Access Communication and Dtac TriNet have registered 13.2 million out of 36.2 million. True Corp and its affiliates Real Move and Real Future have registered 5.9 million out of 23.5 million.

CAT Telecom has reportedly registered 40,000 out of 480,000, while TOT has registered only 117,000 out of 1.47 million.

NBTC is trying to encourage prepaid phone users to register at Tambon Administration Organisation offices nationwide besides the telecom operators’ service shops and mobile applications.
