Getting to know GI products better

The Intellectual Property Department is trying to create a better public understanding of geographical-indication products in a bid to boost their sales.

Nuntawan Sakuntanaga, director-general to the department, said she had asked some people, including teenagers, if they knew what a GI product was and the teens were only aware of Instagram’s IG.
“It was quite disappointing after having promoted GI products for many years that only a few people knew about GI and people confused it with IG: a social application,” she said. 
“The department, thus, will find new ways to increase people’s knowledge [about it].”
Geographical indication |is a name or a sign used on |certain products that corresponds to a specific geographical location or origins, such as a town, a province, a region or a country. 
GI products are high value-added goods and have intellectual property rights.
The department aims to better promote GI products by using the slogan “A unique local product”.
Hopefully, people will not confuse this approach with a popular social media app.
