Egat applauds schools for going green

In 2009, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) initiated the Green School campaign. It supported schools which applied energy and environmental conservation knowledge with their curriculum and operations for sustainability.

In 2015, nine schools and one vocational school received Egat’s Green School certificates, boosting the total number to 122.

The schools were assessed by Mahidol University’s Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies.

Certificates were also extended to 58 schools which cut down electricity use by more than 3 per cent from last year, under the Low-carbon School campaign. Certificates were also extended to 92 schools under a greenhouse gas reduction campaign by Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation (Public Organisation).

“The certificates are the pride of Egat. Our goal is to raise awareness in energy conservation among youth. They should be taught about efficient use of power in the classroom,” said the agency’s deputy governor Ratanachai Namwong.

The green schools and those that share the same goal will form a strong network and this will facilitate Egat materialise its 2016 policy to promote energy and environmental conservation in communities, he added.
