What it takes to be among the “best companies to work for”

What it takes to be among the “best companies to work for”

ONE-HUNDRED companies that have exceptional workplace cultures were recognised in the 2016 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For.

Top of the list is Google (Alphabet), the advertising and marketing arm of Google. Appearing for the first time on the list - completed by global research and consulting firm Great Place to Work and Fortune Magazine - were six companies, including Hilton Worldwide at No 56, Veterans United at No 30 and Slalom Consulting at No 100.
Ranked 28, Cooley, a law firm, turned out to be the company with the highest pay. According to Fortune Magazine, the law firm offered their associates an average compensation package worth around US$268,911. It offers up to $65 per month reimbursement on health-related activities and $3,000 per year for seminars and courses, encouraging staff members to burnish their knowledge.
Hilton Worldwide was pleased that it was among the “Great Places to Work”, as that ranking is based on the belief among employees that they work for great organisations when they consistently trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do and enjoy the people they work with.
“Our team members are the heart and soul of our business,” said Christopher J. Nassetta, president and CEO of Hilton Worldwide. “We succeed when they succeed. Respecting, recognising and rewarding them creates an environment where - together - we have created the world’s best hospitality company.”
The CEO said that the company listens to employees, referred to as team members, to help create the benefits and programmes that matter most to them. Examples include industry-leading parental leave policies that provide ten weeks of fully paid leave for mothers, as well as paid time off for fathers and adoptive parents. In 2015, the company introduced a new GED Assistance programme to help employees in the US earn their high school equivalency diploma. In addition, the company provides 10-day advanced scheduling for hourly team members and continues to expand remote workforce opportunities.
The company now has 58,000 team members at more than 4,600 hotels across a portfolio of 13 brands. Asked to complete an in-depth questionnaire about company practices and programmes designed to gauge five dimensions: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie, the employees gave high marks. The company consequently was included in the Fortune‘s annual ranking of the 100 Best Companies to Work For - joining list stalwarts Four Seasons, Hyatt, Marriott, and Kimpton.
“Now more than ever, it is important for companies to prove they are great workplaces,” said Michael Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work. “Top talent expects as much as they seek new opportunities, and customers are demanding it as well as they decide where to spend their cash. The 100 best workplaces are at the top of the heap in demonstrating they have a high-trust, high-performing culture.”
