Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has urged the Ministry of Commerce to drive Thai export growth to 7 per cent this year through bilateral negotiations with Thailand's trading partners as a means to widen trade and investment, while asking the ministry to help SMEs through the country’s online trade platform. The move came after Somkid met with MOC executives who expressed satisfactory export figures and confidence in future performance.
He said that there should be certain objectives, including customers' specific demand for trade and investment for each country with negotiation plans drafted.
Targeted economies include China, especially with the 11 countries earmarked for its One Belt, One Road initiative. He also asked the ministry to expedite e-commerce through Thailand's own platform to help SMEs with online trade and increase the number of traders through training at the New Economy Academy.
