CRYPTOCURRENCIES SPARK WARNING FROM EX-CHIEF OF CENTRAL BANK

Former governor of the Bank of Thailand Prasarn Trairatvorakul has cautioned the public on investing in cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin, stressing the risks of not fully understanding the assets behind it, its management structure, platform accountability and financial management.
“(People) must separate (financial) technology from products. Useful technology is good. But there could be a problem if there’s a product coming out and attracting investors who do not have a thorough understanding of it due to incomplete information and the lack of a responsible agency,” said Prasarn who also acts as chairman of a committee for national economic reform. Cryptocurrencies, known as coins, are not issued or guaranteed by central banks and the ownership of which is not clearly defined.
Prasarn agreed with the BOT, warning to commercial banks on any involvement in cryptocurrencies as commercial banks handle large amounts of public deposits.
