IMF chief praises Thai silk after IMF–World Bank meetings in Bangkok

The International Monetary Fund chief shared photos of four Thai silk outfits and praised Thailand’s hospitality at the Bangkok meetings.

  • IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva declared herself an "Ambassador of Thai silk" in a social media post after the IMF–World Bank meetings in Bangkok.
  • She demonstrated her appreciation by wearing a different Thai silk outfit each day of the week-long event.
  • Her decision was inspired by an exhibition on Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother and her admiration for Thai culture.
  • Georgieva stated that the fabric had made a deep impression on her and would remain part of her and her family's life.

The Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group concluded in Bangkok, which hosted the event for the first time in 35 years.

Kristalina Georgieva, who wore Thai textile outfits on several occasions during the meetings, shared her appreciation on social media.

The IMF chief posted on her X account, @KGeorgieva, at 1.30pm on Sunday (October 18, 2026):

“I came to Bangkok as the Head of the IMF and I am so proud to leave as Ambassador of Thai silk!”

The message was accompanied by four photographs showing her in four Thai silk outfits.

Georgieva told Thai journalists at a closing press briefing that Thailand had “won gold” in the “Olympics” of global finance.

All participants would remember the meetings for the warmth, outstanding hospitality and kindness of the Thai people, she said, expressing profound thanks to everyone in Thailand.

Thai silk had made a deep impression on her, as had the flavours of Thai food.

She recalled realising that there was nothing more beautiful to wear than Thai silk during a visit to Bangkok to prepare for the meetings.

The visit also included an exhibition about Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, a cultural ambassador for Thai silk.

Out of respect for the Queen Mother and admiration for Thai culture, Georgieva had resolved to wear one Thai silk outfit a day throughout the week.

The fabric would remain part of her life and the lives of her daughter and granddaughter.

Her remark about still having Thai silk outfits left on the final day of the meetings drew laughter.

The interviewer joked that Thailand now had a new ambassador for Thai silk.
