PM leaves for Burma Wednesday

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Wednesday left for Burma on a familiarisation trip during which she is expected to discuss anti-narcotics smuggling efforts and illegal immigrant workers with the Burmese government.

She was accompanied by her deputy and interior minister Yongyuth Wichaidit and government spokesperson Thitima Chaisaeng.

She and her entourage boarded a special air force plane to Burma’s new administrative capital of Naypyidaw. Her one-day trip is to introduce herself as Thailand’s new prime minister, a traditional practice of Asean country members.
Yingluck will also have a discussion with Burmese leaders about boosting bilateral ties, particularly involving trade and investment. The opening of more permanent border crossing points will also be discussed.
She is scheduled to pay a visit to Burmese President Thein Sein, before taking part in a meeting between Thai and Burmese leaders.
The Burmese president is to host a dinner for the Thai leader in the evening. Yingluck and her entourage are scheduled to return to Bangkok shortly before midnight.
Later this month, the prime minister is scheduled to visit other Asean member countries: Malaysia on October 10, Singapore the following day and Vietnam on October 17. She will visit China between October 19 and 21.
