NIST started off its flood relief efforts by raising funds from the school’s community to purchase 100 boats, costing Bt350,000. Among these 100 boats, 66 went to Ayutthaya, 20 to Bang Bua Thong and the remainder to affected communities in Greater Bangkok.
This first initiative has spiralled into a series of fundraising and relief activities. To date, the NIST community has raised over Bt1 million in cash and countless donations of supplies ranging from 1.6 tonnes of rice and thousands of water bottles to sanitary napkins, diapers and children’s kits.
The school’s second focus was on the distribution of relief packs to those in desperate need of food, water and medicine.
International schools united on a Saturday in the middle of last month and 710 packs were assembled in just under two hours, with guidance from NIST’s community and service coordinator Teresa Tung.
The following Sunday, 20 NIST staff and students visited Bang Bua Thong and distributed packs to families who have been completed inundated.
Two weeks later, a second phase of relief pack assembly and distribution occurred, with the NIST community travelling to five affected regions and distributing 800 packs and the remaining boats.
The NIST has also assisted Harrow International School, which has been submerged for months, by offering Harrow the use of its facilities and campus after 3.30pm from Monday-Friday to ensure senior students can continue learning.
