British foreign minister visits Burma

Rangoon - British Foreign Secretary William Hague arrived in Burma Thursday for talks with President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The last time a British foreign minister visited its former colony was in 1955. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was the highest-ranking visitor in decades when she travelled to the Southeast Asian country a month ago.

Burma was a military dictatorship until last year. The current government consists mainly of former military men from the former junta but has instigated a number of changes, raising hopes in the international community of further reforms.

The government has recently freed a number of political prisoners. Hague flew to the capital, Naypyidaw, where he met his Burmese counterpart.

Talks with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi were planned Friday.
