Malaysia's Anwar gears up for election after acquittal

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia's top opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said Monday he would immediately prepare for the next elections after a court acquitted him of sodomy.

"My focus now will be the coming elections," he told his jubilant supporters gathered outside the Kuala Lumpur High Court in Malaysia's capital. "We have an agenda and we have to move forward."
"We made a very important and critical victory. Now I am free to continue my work," he added.
Anwar urged tens of thousands of supporters attending his rallies ahead of the verdict to oust the government of Prime Minister Najib Razak in the next elections, which are widely expected to be held in the first half of the year.
A Malaysian court on Monday acquitted Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy, in an unexpected verdict that took the nation by surprise.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court said it did not find enough evidence to convict Anwar of the charge that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment.
It took only three minutes for High Court Judge Mohamad Zabidin to read his decision.
He said there was no evidence to back the testimony of Anwar accuser and former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan
