British man to be sent home to face rape trial

A British man is set to be sent back to the United Kingdom to face a rape and molestation trial after the Criminal Court ruled yesterday that he be extradited from Thailand within 30 days.

Indicted by a Cardiff court for his alleged rape and sexual molestation in August 2009, Paul Martin Smithers will be returned to the UK after the Criminal Court ruled that criteria for him to be deported were in line with an extradition treaty with Britain.

Smithers was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport on November 2 last year. He admitted to being the person in the Cardiff Court indictment order and did not appeal against the Criminal Court’s extradition order.
