Whales refloated for second time head to sea

Wellington - Thirty-three survivors of a pod of pilot whales that twice stranded on a remote New Zealand beach finally appeared to be heading to deeper water after refloating on Wednesday, news reports said.

At least 40 of the whales that beached on Farewell Spit, at the top of the South Island, on Monday died before volunteers succeeded in refloating the rest on a high tide two days later.
A Conservation Department boat shadowed the whales, ready to summon volunteers if they beached again. //DPA
