Constitutionality of floodway in doubt: Narit

Democrat MP Narit Khumnurak on Friday reminded the government to check on the constitutionality of its floodway project.

“At issue is the environmental impact as sanctioned by Article 67, paragraph 2 of the Constitution,” he said.
Narit said he did not try to block the government’s efforts on flood control but wanted to ensure the constitutional compliance.
The floodway project would be similar to building a dam, or a large reservoir because the project scale is equivalent to an area covering more than 15 square kilometers or an irrigated zone of more than 80,000 rai, hence under the charter provision, this will requre a mandatorty environmental impact assessment, he said.
He said the government should not carry out the project before completing the EIA report in order to any dispute on the constitutionality.
