Former charter drafters opposed to rewriting

Members of the 2007 Constitution Drafting Assembly Monday expressed opposition to the rewriting of the entire charter by a new CDA.

Some members of the 2007 CDA held a press conference to announce their opposition to the on-going charter amendments, which would seek to set up a new CDA to write a new charter.
The press conference was held by Kiartchai Pongpanit, chairman of the 2007 CDA Members Club, Surachai Liangboonlertchai, an appointed senator, and Komsan Phokong, a laws lecturer of Sukhothai Thammathirat University.
They said the amendment of Article 291 to set up a new CDA would be unconstitutional.
They said the current charter could be amended if its enforcement led to problems but so far no problems have occurred.
The former CDA members also feared that the new charter would compromise the power of the King.
Komsan said normally the Parliament would not write a new charter because parliamentarians have conflicts of interest.
