Da Torpedo bail rejected

The Appeals Court yesterday upheld the lower court's decision to reject bail application for lese majeste convict Daranee "Da Torpedo" Chanchoengsilapakul on grounds that she was flight risk.

The high court’s decision said Daranee might flee in the face of her serious charges and penalties. She applied for temporary release pending appellate review on her 2011 conviction and subsequent 15-year jail sentence.
Daranee, an anti-coup activist, was arrested for insulting the monarchy at a red-shirt rally in 2008. After the trial in 2009, she was sentenced to 18 years in jail, though the high court declared a mistrial in 2011 and ordered that the case be reviewed by the Constitution Court. The mistrial was attributed to the fact that a defence argument had not been addressed properly and that a non-public trial was unconstitutional.
The Constitution Court ruled in favour of the lower court’s decision to conduct the trial behind closed doors, paving the way for a second trial, which ended with the same guilty verdict though the term was reduced by three years.
Meanwhile, the red shirts will hold a religious ceremony at Democracy Monument on April 10 in memory of those killed in the April 10 and May 19, 2010 incidents, Thida Thawornseth, chairperson of the movement told the press yesterday. In addition, the red shirts will be holding a rally at Ratchaprasong intersection to mark the end of their 2010 protest. Thida offered apologies to business operators in the area for the disruptions the protest might cause.
In 2010, the red shirts occupied Ratchaprasong and areas nearby for about two months before being dispersed by government security forces.
