FDA to set fire to Bt6.9m worth of drugs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will today burn nearly three tonnes of confiscated illicit drugs that are worth up to Bt6.978 billion.

Winai Monthapong, legal adviser of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, said the agency would incinerate a total of 2,755 kilograms of narcotics confiscated in 1,023 cases at the Bang Pain Industrial Estate in Ayutthaya. He was speaking after inspecting 33 random samples of the drugs at the FDA warehouse.
Among the drugs to be destroyed are 1,936kg of methamphetamine tablets worth Bt6.45 billion, 147kg of crystal methamphetamine worth Bt433 million and 58kg of heroin worth Bt41 million.
He added there was a huge backlog of pending court cases with a massive amount of seized narcotics, which cannot be destroyed yet. If a suspect pleads guilty, each trial can be completed within two months, otherwise it will continue for a year or two. He said the faster the trials progress, the quicker the drugs can be destroyed.
