Comedian Don has last laugh over cancer

Veteran comedian Lek Phianwitkate, better known by his stagename Don Jamookban [spread-out nose], has survived liver cancer.

He’s also selling fermented fish to boost his income.
Speaking on a morning news programme aired on Nation Channel yesterday, Don said he was lucky to have been a non-drinker, otherwise the only remaining parts of his liver probably would not have been able to take the strain. Not much of his liver was left after the cancerridden parts had been removed in the surgery that saved his life.
Don, 61, said he was diagnosed with liver cancer, at stage four out of five, in 2007, the same year late folk singer Niphon Phraiwal, or Yodrak Salakjai, was also diagnosed at stage one of the same illness. Before he underwent the operation, Don’s weight dropped to 53 kilos. It is now back to 64, near his normal level.
Don said today he preferred to perform for payment rather than receive donations. He also needed to sell the fermented fish and chilli paste to cope with high followup treatment and medication costs. “I insist I don’t want donations, but you could better call me for shows. I can now stay with the production crew all night, till dawn,” he laughed.
