A number 10 typhoon signal, the highest possible warning level, was issued shortly after midnight, the first time the 10 signal had been issued since 1999 when Typhoon York struck the territory.
Vicente, which made landfall in southern China about 100kilometres west of Hong Kong before weakening into a severe tropical storm, caused extensive disruptions to transportation with 136flights cancelled, delayed or diverted Tuesday morning. Bus, ferry and rail services were also hit.
