Thai exports down 2.5 per cent in June on eurozone debt crisis

Thailand's exports last month were valued at 20.1billion dollars, down 2.5 per cent year-on-year, as demand slackened because of the eurozone debt crisis, Commerce Ministry officials said Wednesday.

During the first six months of 2012, Thailand's exports amounted to 112.6 billion, down 1.7 per cent compared with the same period last year, led by a 12-per-cent drop in exports to Europe.

The European market traditionally accounts for about 10 per cent of Thailand's total exports.

Another factor dragging down the kingdom's export performance in the first half of 2012 was a 49.2-per-cent fall in rice shipments, according to Commerce Ministry data.//DPA
