Protest over lack of flood benefits

A large number of flood-affected residents from northern Bangkok gathered outside Lak Si district office yesterday to protest non- or partial payment of the Bt20,000 in compensation they say was approved but never reached them.

Protest leader Phornchai Duangdaengchote said many homes that sustained heavy damage barely got Bt1,000, while their neighbours received just Bt2,700, and many abandoned homes received the full Bt20,000. The protesters were angry because after a first meeting on July 24 they were told by the district officer to come back on Monday, only be denied an answer yet again.

The group said they would lodge a complaint with the Department of Special Investigation to look into non- or partial payments.
