The two detainees – Surat Thani resident Kalaya Thawo, 49, and Chumpon resident Thanom Chansamut, 52 – are suspected of dealing in drugs and both have confessed to growing and selling marijuana. They were among the 92 Thai nationals caught by Myanmar soldiers last month for entering the country illegally and trespassing on state land.
Thanom was also charged with possessing war weapons, for which he faces a penalty of seven years in jail. Before that he was also sentenced to three and a half years in jail for illegal entry and intrusion on a protected forest in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, the other 83 detainees, who only face charges of illegal entry and intrusion, are undergoing the process of requesting a pardon in Nay Pyi Taw.
