Exiled pro-democracy activist returns to Myanmar after 22 years

Yangon - A former student leader of pro-democracy protests in 1988 returned to Myanmar Saturday after being removed from a government blacklist.

Moe Thee Zun, 50, and six other political activists passed through immigration at Yangon International Airport with no difficulties.

Moe Thee Zun was a leader of the protests in Yangon that ended with a deadly military crackdown. The founder of the Federation of Burma organisation fled Myanmar in 1990 and has spent the past two decades in the United States.

He made no comments at the airport but promised to speak publicly on Sunday.

He was one of 2,082 people whose names were removed from a list of 6,165 Myanmar and foreign nationals denied entry to the country, which was under military rule between 1962-2010.

Among those taken off the list were Alexander and Kim Aris - the British sons of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi - and several foreign journlaists.//DPA
