IMF chief calls for more time for troubled eurozone nations

Tokyo - The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday called for more time to be allowed for Spain, Portugal and Greece to stabilise their economies.

When several countries implement austerity measures at once, "it is sometime better to have a bit more time" before expecting them to take effect, Christine Lagarde said in Tokyo, where the international lender is holding its annual meeting with the World Bank.

With regard to Greece, she said an extra "two years was necessary for the country to actually face a fiscal consolidation programmethat is considered."//DPA
