Designer writes about 'magic' at Apple

"The Design of Magic", published by Nation Books, offers valuable insight into the corporate culture and management principles used at Steve Jobs' Apple Inc.

Rattapoom Vudhichamnong who previously worked as a product designer at Apple, wrote the book, which was launched at the 17th Book Expo Thailand yesterday.

“I encouraged Rattapoom to write this book because he has valuable information on Apple. He is part of Apple. These days, most books about Jobs and Apple are based on external sources,” Nation Multimedia Group (NMG) chairman Suthichai Yoon said at the book launch.

Nation Books is under the NMG umbrella.

“Apple designs have combined art and science,” Rattapoom explained. “Its designers need to be interested in and have knowledge about several different fields, be it engineering, technology, science, arts, music, biology and politics. Limited knowledge limits creativity.”

Heading to the United States with an engineering degree from Chulalongkorn University and years of work experience, Rattapoom completed his master’s degree there before securing jobs at leading IT companies – one of which was Apple.

“At Apple, Steve Jobs was the source of inspiration,” the 37-year-old said. “There are other Thais working at Apple too and I hope more people will realise that there are opportunities out there.”
