Cambodia to deport woman who damaged royal photos

Phnom Penh - A Chinese woman was set to be deported from Cambodia after damaging two photographs of the country's recently deceased former king, media reports said Wednesday.

Garment factory manager Wang Zia Chao sparked a strike on Monday after she tore up the images of Norodom Sihanouk in Phnom Penh, reports said.

She was given a suspended one-year sentence and fined 2.5 million riel (620 dollars) late Tuesday for intentionally causing damage to the photos and would be deported, The Phnom Penh Post newspaper reported, quoting judge Seng Neang.

The accused begged forgiveness at court, saying she had not realised the photos were of Norodom Sihanouk, the paper said.

"I would not have done that if I knew it was the king's photos,"Wang Zia Chao was quoted as saying.//DPA
