Morale plummets after two teachers injured in an attack

Shock again struck the deep south on Friday when two teachers were injured in an insurgency attack in Pattani province despite being under the protection of the combined forces.

Boonsom Thongsriprai, president of teachers’ federation in three southern border provinces, said that the authorities should immediately review its measures as the teachers, Sukit Rittidet and Wanpen Janjam, were attacked in the morning on their way to Ban Ton Makham school in Yarang district.
“We have an agreement with the security authority which says that between 7am and 10am, teachers and students going to schools are under the protection of the combined forces. Now that both teachers have been attacked during this period, which should be the safest, security authorities have to review their measures and discover how this happened,” he said.
The teachers were wounded in the attack. They join a list of 148 educational personnel to have been injured in attacks. Up to now, 153 teachers have lost their lives in violent incidents, he said..
The already low morale of teachers in the region has been made worse by the attack, he said.
