The restaurant is being checked for contamination after a customer died from streptococcus bacteria infection. Reports show that the 25-year-old graduate student fell ill after eating at the restaurant with her friends on November 15 and died on November 23.
Dr Surasing Wisarutrat, deputy chief of the health office, said she possibly developed the infection from eating undercooked meat. He said other factors also needed to be considered in this case, such as the woman’s health condition, because her friends did not fall ill. He said the case should be concluded soon, adding that the office would conduct a close inspection of the barbecue restaurant ahead of the high tourist season.
Chiang Mai Mayor Tassanai Buranupakorn said he had spoken to health officials and urged them to inspect and educate restaurateurs about maintaining hygienic conditions in the kitchen to prevent a reoccurrence of such issues.
