Two of the three inmates who were caught trying to escape the prison were shot to death while another one survived the raid after surrendering.
Police decided to raid the prison after two-hour standoff and decided to shoot the inmates after seeing them assaulting the warden; Suthep Joisriket.
The slain inmates were Ronnachai Sripankaew and Prasit Saensabai while Sutthirat Saengarthit survived. They were serving life sentences for murder and drug smuggling at the prison.
The drama took place after Suthep caught the trio trying to hotwire and steal a backhoe, which they planned to use to run down a prison gate. Corrections Department deputy Kobkiat Kasiwiwat said the inmates then retreated to a building under construction in the compound with Suthep.
Kobkiat said the three had planned to make their getaway assuming a shortage of guards on the holiday break.
