EU to keep diplomats in North Korea

Brussels - Diplomats from seven European Union countries with offices in North Korea are not expected to leave the country, an official from the bloc said Tuesday.

Bulgaria, Britain, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania and Sweden are "not considering any evacuation at the moment," said the EU official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He said there have been no signs of heightened military activity in Pyongyang.

"The situation is tense and potentially volatile ... but we don't believe they're on the brink of armed conflict," he noted, dismissing also any "imminent threat" in South Korea. "But I would not say we're 100 per cent sure. Any embassy has to have contingency plans."   The EU is weighing new sanctions on North Korea, focused mostly on hampering access to nuclear and missile technologies, the officialsaid. But he did not rule out measures targeting North Korea's Foreign Trade Bank if the need for pressure "becomes more acute."//DPA
