There were four candidates in the election to fill the seat vacated by Chaiyaphum Senator Porntip Lohweera who stepped down as deputy Senate speaker after she held the position for two years.
The four candidates were Anan, Nakhon Phanom Senator Witthaya Inala, Uttaradit Senator Naruemol Siriwat, and Phetchaburi Senator Sumol Sutawiriyawat.
The first round of voting saw Witthaya receive 11 votes, Naruemol 54 votes, Anan 39 votes, and Sumol 37 votes.
Since none received the simple majority of 75 votes, the second round of voting was held with the two top-vote earners competing.
The second round of voting saw both Anan and Naruemol receive 68 votes. By the Senate meeting regulations, the chairman of the meeting had to draw lot for the winner and Anan won the position. It was the first time that the method was used in selecting the winner.
