Car bombs exploded in ten different districts of the Iraqi capital, hitting busy markets in areas mainly populated by Shiite Muslims.
Traffic disappeared from the streets in the wake of the explosions and shops and markets pulled down their shutters, fearing further blasts, witnesses said.
Army and police deployed across the city and traffic police ordered owners to remove parked vehicles.
Iraq has witnessed a rise in sectarian Sunni-Shiite attacks in recent weeks, raising fears of a return to the sectarian tensions that drove the country to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.
The United Nations said April was the deadliest month in Iraq since June 2008, with more than 700 people killed and 1,600 wounded.//DPA
