Panel formed to improve P4P implementation

The Cabinet yesterday set up a committee to improve the implementation of Pay-for-Performance (P4P) policy in the public-healthcare services.

“The panel will identify problems and obstacles from the implementation,” Government Spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi said.
Launched by Public Health Minister Pradit Sinthawanarong, the policy has drawn strong opposition from the Rural Doctors Society and also protest.
Rural doctors and their allies even mounted the campaign to oust Pradit.
However, PM’s Secretary General Suranand Vejjajiva stepped in to help diffuse the conflict and offer solutions.
The society’s president Kriengsak Vatcharanukulkiat has said he will wait to see whether the government is sincere in addressing the problems from the P4P.
The panel, Teera said, would conclude within 60 days on how the implementation should improve.
“Then, the proposed solutions should take effect on October 1,” he said.
The P4P policy has taken effect since April 1, but some hospitals have refused to follow it.
Kriengsak said after the negotiation chaired by Suranand, another panel was also established to look into the recent removal of Government Pharmaceutical Organisation’s director Vitit Uttavachakul.
The removal has also caused uproar among rural doctors who feel Vitit’s dismissal was politically motivated.
