Forecast for heavy downpours, floods

A warning was issued yesterday for heavy downpours and possible floods and landslides until tomorrow in 39 provinces of upper Thailand as well as Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Phang Nga in the South.

Small craft were advised to stay close to shore because of high waves and strong winds.
Chatchai Phromlert, director-general of the Disaster Preven-tion and Mitigation Department, said it had instructed its regional branches and provincial authorities to prepare for disasters and emergencies and monitor conditions around the clock. Disaster victims should call the 1784 hotline.
In Ranong, one of the 39 provinces, authorities were keeping an eye on 84 landslide-prone areas in five districts.
In Phang Nga, which has suffered from heavy downpours for three days, forest run-off hit three tambon in Takua Pa district – Bang Moung, Bang Sai and Tam Tua. At least 80 homes were under 50-100 centimetres of flood water, while the rising river in Kapong and Muang districts threatened to flood people’s homes.
The body of villager Pravit Udom, 58, was recovered after he reportedly went fishing. Authorities learned that he had been shot dead.
