MONDAY, JUNE 24, 2013

Los Angeles - Tightrope walker Nick Wallenda become the first person ever to cross the Grand Canyon on a tightrope late Sunday when he crossed the massive gorge in a 23-minute walk.

Wallenda, 34, a seventh-generation scion of the Flying Wallenda circus family of daredevils, completed the feat despite strong winds.
He took two rests on the way across to stop cable movement generated by the wind and his footsteps on the 5-centimetre cable which was strung some 500 metres above the Little Colorado River Gorge.
The stunt across the 425-metre gap was filmed by the Discovery Network television broadcaster and shown around the world with a 10-second delay.//DPA
