New minister vows crackdown on forest encroachers

Newly appointed Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wichet Kasemthongsri has vowed to fight against those who encroach on forest reserve land and ordered senior officials to review forest protection laws.

Wichet, former chairman of PTT Plc's board of directors, also instructed officials to use satellite imagery to monitor forest encroachment as regularly as every three months. This would be a key index in judging the performance of highlevel officials and would also enable officials to better protect forest terrain nationwide, he told a meeting of senior ministry officials Wednesday.
