Judges' poll fails to fill EC job

The Supreme Court is expected to convene the next round of voting at a later date after yesterday's meeting failed to nominate a candidate for the Election Commission.

Under relevant laws, the high court is empowered to name two candidates from among its judges to become applicants for the EC job.
Last month the court successfully conducted a peer vote to pick senior judge Suphachai Somcharoen as one of two candidates.
But none of the other five aspiring nominees could muster the support of a simple majority to become the second candidate.
Yesterday saw some 149 judges casting votes on the five and once again the result fell short of a simple majority.
The five comprise four judges and one academic. The judges are Premchai Kittikhunpairoj, Phichit Khamphaeng, ML Ritthithep Devakula and Theerawat Theerarojwit.
The academic is Pimol Pupipit from Ramkhamhaeng University.
