Tighter measures to control encroachment

Two state agencies have teamed up to suppress forest encroachment after finding that more than 6,000-rai (960 hectares) of coastal-mangrove forest have been destroyed in the past decade.

Under a collaboration between the Marine and Coastal Resources Department and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), thousands of officials and investigative equipment such closed-circuit TV, imagery from satellites, and unmanned aerial drones, will be deployed to detect and arrest those responsible for encroachment.
  • Thailand’s mangrove forests cover a coastal area of more than 3,100 kilometres. Over the past 10 years, about 6,635-rai of forest have been destroyed. According to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Vichet Kasemthongsri, there have been 990 mangrove encroachment court cases over the past decade.
