Three bomb-disposal police killed in Narathiwat explosion

Three bomb-disposal experts were killed Monday morning when insurgents detonated a roadside bomb they were about to defuse in the southern border province of Narathiwat.

The incident occurred at 9.40am on the road to Sompoi village in Tambon Kayoh Mati in Bacho district.
The three were identified as Pol Sub-Lt Shaen Warongphaisit, 50, who headed the bomb disposal unit, Pol Sgt-Maj Nimit Deewong, 32, and Pol Sub-Lt Charoon Metruang.
Police said Shaen led 13 officers from his bomb-disposal unit to the scene in two cars following an alert that bomb-like objects had been observed.
While the officers were walking to check the objects, insurgents hiding nearby used a mobile phone to detonate a bomb, killing the three.
The rest of the officers found another home-made bomb also fabricated from gas cylinder and successfully detonated it.
