Truck carrying workers crashes in Phuket, 1 killed

A truck carrying construction workers flipped on a hill on the beach road between Patong and Kamala yesterday, killing one and injuring 12.

The Kamala Police Station was notified of the accident at about 5.30pm, but by the time the officers arrived, traffic police were already at the scene directing cars.
“We found an Isuzu pick-up truck had crashed into a drainage ditch, and more than 10 injured people were strewn across the road,” police investigator Lieutenant Navin Petchjan said.
The 13 victims were taken to Patong Hospital.
Of the eight Mon ethnic people injured, one succumbed to his injuries despite being moved to the better-equipped Vachira Phuket Hospital. Apart from the eight Mon people, one other Myanmar national and four Thais were also injured.
“I was taking the workers from Patong to Kamala, as usual, but when I began to descend the hill, it was too steep and I couldn’t brake,” Mhad Kawiset, 51, said.
He was charged with reckless driving resulting in death.
“The crash might have been caused by brake failure, but we will investigate further to confirm the true cause of the accident,” Navin said.
Vachira Hospital staff confirmed another patient was transferred to the hospital but refused to elaborate.
