EC to name date for by-election

The Election Commission will convene on Wednesday to choose the by-election date following the resignation of nine Democrat MPs to lead the anti-government protest, EC commissioner Sodsri Satayatham said Tuesday.

The EC will then submit the date to the Cabinet and it will later be announced in the Royal Gazette, she said that the by-elections will be held within 45 days following the resignations.

On Tuesday, nine Democrat MPs tendered their resignations namely, Suthep Thaugsuban, Thavorn Senneam, Satit Wongnongtaey, Witthaya Kaewparadai, Issara Somchai, Chumphon Junsai, Puttipong Kunnakan, Ekkanat Promphan and Natthapol Theepsuwan.
They decided to quit as MPs so that they could turn their attention to leading the anti-Yingluck government protest. All stated that it was not necessary for them to hide behind the protection that MP status affords.
Sodsri said the budget allocated for the by-election would not be less than Bt80 million, as eight of the nine were constituency MPs.
