Eight dead as warehouse raided in Philippine disaster zone

Manila - Eight people were killed when thousands of survivors of one of the world's strongest typhoons stormed agovernment rice warehouse, a Philippine official said Wednesday.

The victims were crushed when a wall of the warehouse collapsed in the surge of people in Alangalan town in Leyte province on Tuesday, said Rex Estoperez, a spokesman for the National Food Authority.

"It's very unfortunate," he said by telephone. "Our appeal is that those who took the supplies please share with the people who need it and not to sell them."   Estoperez said 33,000 sacks of milled rice and 96,000 sacks of unmilled rice were taken from the warehouse. Each bag contained 50 kilos of the staple grain, and the cost of the loss was 1.26 billion pesos (29.3 million dollars).//DPA
