Jury awards Apple 290 million dollars over Samsung patent

San Francisco - A jury on Thursday ordered Samsung to pay Apple 290 million dollars in damages for violating iPhone and iPad patents, an amount that will be added to the almost 600 million Samsung has already been ordered to shell out.

The sum was less than the 380 million dollars that Apple had demanded, but far more than the 52 million dollars that Samsung had argued would be a fair outcome.
The jury's decision means that Samsung must pay Apple a total of some 900 million dollars for patent violations in 13 Samsung devices.
A jury last year had awarded Apple 1.05 billion dollars, but Judge Lucy Koh of the US District Court of Northern California found that the jury had miscalculated part of the sum - 450 million dollars – and ordered the new trial that ended on Thursday.
The case was part of a wider global patent war between the world's two dominant smartphone manufacturers. The phones in dispute are all older models no longer sold in the US. But the companies are set to clash again in court in March over Apple claims that current Samsung phones also violate its patents.
In reaching its decision Thursday, the jury broke down damages for each of the smartphones, finding the Samsung Infuse 4G, at nearly 100 million dollars, and the Droid Charge, at 60 million dollars, warranted the most damages, according to the San Jose Mercury News.//DPA
