The Lao Statistics Bureau has begun preparations for holding the census on March 1 to 7, the Vientiane Times reported.
"For next year's survey, foreigners who have lived in Laos for more than six months will be included in the statistics," the daily said.
The census will cost the state 7.2 million dollars to conduct.
It will include information on professions, marital status, income, housing conditions, access to electricity and media.
Laos' current population is estimated at 6.4 million people based on results from the last census held in 2005.
