Arrest warrant for Apiwan over lese majeste

Former deputy House speaker and red-shirt co-leader Apiwan Wiriyachai, as of press time, had not contacted police after the Criminal Court approved an arrest warrant for him on Wednesday for allegedly committing lese majeste at a red-shirt rally.

Deputy National Police chief, Pol General Somyot Poompanmoung, said Thursday that the authorities had evidence in the form of an audio recording of Apiwan’s speech on January 29, 2011, in Phetchaburi province.
The complaint against Apiwan had not been lodged earlier for fear of the Pheu Thai-led government’s power, he said. Apiwan has not approached police to turn himself in, he added.
The National Council for Peace and Order has already issued an order banning Apiwan from leaving the country.
