Debt repayment bill wins strong support in NLA

A bill that will lay down legal guidelines on repayment collection yesterday sailed through its first reading in the National Legislative Assembly (NLA).

A total of 168 members of the assembly voted support of the bill, with four abstentions.
The NLA also set up a 25-member ad hoc committee to complete vetting of the bill within seven days.
Under the new law, people convicted of violating the guidelines will face legal punishment.
In recent years, several debtors have complained that some debt collectors have adopted aggressive techniques when pressing for repayments.
