Troops again halt energy reform march

Surat Thani soldiers have taken into custody eight leading members of the group called "Partnership on Energy Reform". The eight had joined a 950-kilometre march from Songkhla to Bangkok demanding energy reform from the National Council for Peace and Orde

Cholthan Klinthong, who led the group’s Songkhla members, passed the marching flag to Praveen Chulapakdi, a special lecturer at Surat Thani Rajabhat University, and seven others at Surat Thani’s Don Sak district to continue the march. As the eight walked towards Muang district, they were stopped and taken in a pick-up truck and van to the Vibhavadi Rangsit Army Camp, where they will reportedly remain for a while.
The group's march was also halted late last month on grounds it violated a military-imposed law against assembly of more than five people.
At that time, some 10 activists were arrested and taken to an Army camp in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district.
After subsequent negotiation, the march resumed.
