Traffic violations drop by 67%

More than 40,000 cars have had their wheels locked since traffic police launched a campaign on June 9 enforcing traffic laws in the capital.

The crackdown saw traffic violations drop by a marked 67 per cent in the second phase of the campaign – from September 9 to 17.
Pol Maj-General Jirasun Keawsaengeak, commander of Traffic Police, said officers were enforcing the law strictly in line with the policies of the Metropolitan Police Bureau and Royal Thai Police.
He also said roads under the supervision of Traffic Police Division 3 had the highest number of traffic violations because there weren’t enough officers to cover wide and heavily populated areas.
Traffic Police also warned motorists about wrongly using fog lights and modified lights, adding that violators will be slapped with a Bt500 fine. Drivers will also be hit with a Bt2,000 fine if their lights are modified to be brighter or point in a higher direction than allowed by law.
